Breed Focus – Ragdolls

Ragdolls are known for their affectionate, laid-back nature and striking appearance. With their semi-long silky coats, bright blue eyes, and distinctive colour-point patterns, they are often described as the teddy bears of the cat world. They are large, muscular kitties with gentle personalities, making them ideal companions in a calm, attentive environment.

Originally developed in California in the 1960s, Ragdolls were selectively bred for their docile temperament and tendency to go limp when picked up – hence the name. Despite their American origins, they are now firmly established as one of the UK’s most beloved pedigree breeds, particularly among families and individuals seeking a calm, people-oriented companion.

Ragdolls thrive on human interaction and dislike being left alone for long periods. They often follow their humans from room to room and will happily curl up next to them, or even on them, at any opportunity. They’re also highly tolerant and rarely lash out, which makes them a good match for households with gentle children or other animals.

When caring for Ragdoll guests, it’s important to remember that their relaxed nature can mask signs of stress. They may not vocalise discomfort or anxiety as readily as other breeds, so subtle cues such as reduced appetite, withdrawal or over-grooming should be monitored. They tend to enjoy gentle routine and consistent attention, so providing a predictable, quiet space with soft bedding and human interaction is ideal.

Ragdolls have plush coats that do not mat easily but still benefit from regular grooming. A gentle brush every few days is usually enough to keep their fur in top condition and offers a lovely bonding opportunity. Some may even seek out grooming as a form of affection. Be mindful that they can be prone to weight gain, so keeping an eye on portion control and encouraging light play is important, especially as they mature and become more sedentary.

Their easygoing and affectionate nature makes Ragdolls particularly suited to the Longcroft environment, where they receive one-to-one attention, consistent care, and a calm, homely atmosphere. They flourish with familiar routines, cosy spaces, and gentle reassurance – making them model guests in every sense.
