Breed Focus: Siamese

Siamese

I chose Siamese this month as our focus and I’m lucky enough to have had Elsie and Elvis to stay … they have kept us amused this week with their charm and playfulness! – Abi

Siamese cats are one of the most recognisable and vocal breeds we welcome into our hotels. With their striking blue eyes, short pointed coats, and strong personalities, they tend to make an impression quickly.  Hopefully this article will help us all understand this gorgeous breed a little more.

Siamese cats are intelligent, inquisitive and thrive on interaction. They are rarely passive observers and often prefer active engagement with their environment and humans. Many Siamese guests will seek out regular companionship and may vocalise more frequently if they feel overlooked. It’s not just chatter for the sake of it; vocalisation can be a sign of boredom, anxiety or simply a request for attention. Take time to understand the tone and pattern of each individual kitty’s communication. Some may want regular reassurance, others may just enjoy a daily chat.

They can become easily stressed in isolation or with too much environmental change. Their sensitivity makes it essential that we offer consistency wherever possible. They love familiar routines, feeding times and interaction styles throughout their stay. Observe and adjust your approach if a Siamese guest seems unsettled. Something as small as additional visibility of neighbouring guests or access to a view can help soothe them.

Many Siamese kitties have strong bonds with their owners and may need extra time to adjust when checking in. Careful, confident touch is paramount and allowing them to explore the suite at their own pace can help establish trust. Offering interactive toys or simple problem-solving activities can also be beneficial in keeping them stimulated during their stay.

Grooming needs are minimal due to their short coat, but this doesn’t mean grooming should be ignored. Gentle daily strokes with a grooming mitt can help reinforce your bond and act as a calming activity for both guest and hotel owner.

If a Siamese guest appears particularly distressed or withdrawn, it’s important to review all potential stressors, including noise levels and suite positioning. They are more likely than many breeds to internalise stress physically, so we should monitor eating, litter tray activity and vocal habits carefully.

As with all our guests, communication with the owner is key. Siamese cat owners often have a very close relationship with their kitty and will appreciate thoughtful updates that reflect their cat’s personality and preferences.

We love having Siamese kitties with us. Their character, charm and companionship make them memorable guests, and with the right care and understanding, they settle in beautifully.
